Year after year, Pantone Colour Institute, the global colour trends company, announces the colour that we will see across design, fashion, technology, art, food, advertising, travel and beyond. In 2016, it was a pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity (a pale pink and powder blue); Greenery, a zesty green, in 2017; and this year, it is Pantone 18-3838, better known as Ultra Violet. “Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead,” says Pantone on its website.

The crystals of HC8 were tiny and scattered only weakly as diffracting crystals. Despite ~60 hours of prolonged measurement, no observable data were observed beyond 1.05 Å. Having acceptable data up to 0.83 Å would have required a measurement of several weeks, and therefore, a data strategy up to 1.0 Å only was used. The crystal structure displayed acceptable atomic displacement ellipsoids, so the relatively low data resolution does not appear to have an influence on the structure quality. For the structure of S-HC8, the terminal imidazole ring of both independent molecules appeared to be disordered over two independent positions, which also implied that two different sets of water molecules were present in the channels. The relative occupancies of the positionally disordered phenyl rings were approximately 0.8/0.2 in both cases. A number of distance and vibration restraints were used to keep an acceptable geometry of the rings and reasonable atomic displacement parameters. Because the anomalous scattering was negligible for the used x-ray wavelength, the absolute configuration was set in such a way as to be in agreement with the MD simulations reported by Licsandru et al. (14), notably concerning the orientation of the water molecules in the channel. The crystals of R-HC8 were also tiny and weakly scattering even with synchrotron data, producing only a very low mean intensity, <I/σ(I)> = 5.4 for 23652 reflections.

  After graduating from SAIL, Magar pursued commercial photography at Lively Technical Center. There, she became immersed in learning every inch of her camera and getting hands-on experience working with different techniques. However, a shift slowly began to occur and Magar found she wasn’t as passionate about taking portraits or photographing in a studio environment as she was taking fine arts photos.   Magar will enroll at Tallahassee Community College in January with sights set on becoming an art teacher or art therapist. She’s focused now on abstract images and finds that she can never get close enough to her subject. The furthest she’s gone for a shot placed her upside-down and hanging out of a tree with her camera nearly touching the surface of a lake. Another project that explored nightmarish images taught her an important lesson about photographing in public spaces.   “I had my boyfriend put on a gold mask, cover himself in a sheet, and get into a bush,” describes Magar. “This poor woman came running by with her dog and was so alarmed. I carry a little sign now that says photographing in progress and to get people’s attention and explain what is going on.”   Magar admits that some of her best work is done while buried in seemingly random objects. While the untrained eye sees clutter, she sees magic in the everyday and will flip her perspective to find something new or interesting in something as simple as a plastic water bottle.

Gentian or crystal violet is a bright-blue-violet dye that was synthesized in the 19th century. It was derived from plants in the genus Gentiana. This compound has antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic and antifungal activity. Dermatologists have reported benefit using this old-fashioned topical medication for treating toenail fungus (Experimental Dermatology, December 2013).
