Abstract: A packaged electronic system comprises a slab ([b]210[/b]) of low-grade silicon (l-g-Si) configured as ridges ([b]114[/b]) framing a depression of depth ([b]112[/b]) including a recessed central area suitable to accommodate semiconductor chips and embedded electrical components, the depth at least equal to the thickness of the chips and the components, the ridge covered by system terminals ([b]209[/b][i]b[/i]) connected to attachment pads in the central area; and semiconductor chips ([b]120, 130[/b]) having a thickness and terminals on at least one of opposing chip sides, the chips terminals attached to the central area terminals so that the opposite chip side is coplanar with the system terminals on the slab ridge.

Investigation of the peopling of the Americas has generated decades of scholarly studies, increasingly illuminated by paleoecological and particularly paleogenetic research. There are currently several models of the peopling process differing with respect to timing, routes, and affiliation with modern (and ancient) populations in Asia and the Americas (Fig. 1). One perspective that has become prominent in the last decade is of an early entry (~25,000 to 15,000 years ago) into the Americas via a Pacific coastal migration. This perspective further implies ecological adaptations (for example, the kelp highway hypothesis) and, more recently, typological relationships (stemmed points) (1–5). We believe that this perspective, although commonly disseminated in the popular press (6–8), is a prematurely narrow interpretation of current evidence, which yields far less certainty. Some proponents (1) also assert that there is near-complete agreement among archeologists on these issues, but the most recent relevant survey (9) shows that archeologists remain divided, with substantial numbers thinking migrants used both interior and coastal routes, as well as strong skepticism for several proposed pre-Clovis sites. More nuanced consideration of the proposed alternatives can also be found (10–12). Here, we evaluate the claims made in (1) and elsewhere with respect to the current genetic, archeological, and paleoecological data and identify model constraints. We also suggest avenues of further research to refine models of the peopling of the Americas. Due to multiple dating techniques presented in this paper, we use years ago for calibrated radiocarbon dates, OSL and cosmogenic dates, and genetic age estimates. All of these are roughly comparable.
Vibrational SFG spectroscopy involves nonlinear mixing of an infrared and a visible electric field, giving rise to the emission of photons at the sum of the two input frequencies (32, 33). Within the dipole approximation, SFG requires broken inversion symmetry. Accordingly, SFG is surface-specific for liquids, because the interface necessarily breaks the average inversion symmetry found in the bulk liquid. This means that SFG spectroscopy is intrinsically sensitive to molecular dipole ordering, with the signal strength increasing with an increase in order. SFG spectroscopy is also a sensitive probe of chirality, because chirality breaks inversion symmetry (34, 35). By controlling the polarization of three involved fields, we can selectively study achiral and chiral molecular structures. Polarization combinations are given in decreasing order of frequency, that is, the polarization of SFG, visible, and infrared fields, respectively. Here, polarization combinations that involve an odd number of p-polarized fields (ssp, sps, pss, and ppp) probe achiral molecular orientations, and polarization combinations that involve two p-polarized fields (pps, psp, and spp) only give rise to a signal if the molecular structure is chiral (sss is intrinsically zero for surfaces with C∞ symmetry).

Until now, chemists have had two main tools to discern the structure of crystals. The first, and most often used, is X-ray crystallography. In this approach, X-rays are fired at a crystal and researchers note the diffraction patterns to determine the crystal’s chemical structure. The second tool, called nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, works indirectly by disturbing the magnetic behavior in the atoms that make up a crystal and noting their behavior. The one main drawback of both of these tools is that they cannot be used to determine the structure of very small crystals. In this new approach, both teams replaced X-rays in the first tool with an electron beam to determine the structure of very small crystals. After firing at a crystal target, its structure can be determined by studying the resulting diffraction patterns.
