Instead of removing dye from water, the research team sought to change the color of the dyes to something that falls outside of what we can see in the visible spectrum. A chemical reaction can, for example, disrupt the color red and make it appear clear, or colorless.
In the psp chiral SFG polarization combination (Fig. 3C), we observe a weak but nonzero chiral signal for the lipid bilayer without channels. This signal is caused by the chiral headgroups of the lipids inducing a chiral-polarized arrangement of water molecules near the polar region of the bilayer. The presence of the 2800-cm−1 stretching band in the chiral spp polarized spectra of the HC8 and S-HC8 channels (Fig. 3D) shows that both channels exhibit a net chiral ordering in the SLB. Although this feature is expected for the S-HC8 channel, this ordering shows that in addition to inducing a dipolar alignment of the water wires, the supported bilayer breaks the symmetry and also induces a net chirality for the HC8 channel (Fig. 3E).
Other Forbes specimens have better preserved the poetic mystique of their origins. There is a murex shell from the Eastern Mediterranean, a quarter million of which were needed to make a single ounce of Tyrian Purple, the color used in the Roman Republic to edge the togas of the powerful. There is a loaf of toxic tawny-red cinnabar. (Buy it in solid cakes, Cennini advises, lest some scoundrel has adulterated the stuff with brick dust.) There is the copper-arsenite Scheele’s Green, synthesized at the beginning of the nineteenth century and more dazzling than traditional verdigris, the green-blue patina given off by corroded copper. A later variant of Scheele’s, Paris Green, equally toxic and even brighter, was so cheap to produce that it coated Victorian wallpapers, children’s toys, and—despite early evidence of its toxicity—even confectionery. Following Napoleon’s death, in 1821, some Bonapartists put it about that the British had poisoned their hero by having him sleep in a green room, the paper releasing arsenic vapors in the damp sea air.

However, there is the now-senior Senator from Rhode Island, who has a national reputation as an expert on issues of national defense and is a constantly rumored to serve as the Secretary of Defense.
Dyes are common in industries such as textiles, cosmetics, food processing, papermaking, and plastics. Globally, we produce about 700,000 metric tons—the weight of two Empire State Buildings—of dye each year to color our clothing, eye shadow, toys, and vending machine candy.
As a light cold rain fell, I was in a skyscraper overlooking Boston Harbor last Tuesday. In the gray murk, the harbor’s islands looked like surfaced whales. It was a scene of great and mysterious beauty.

Abstract: A low-debris low-interference semi-solid well perforator having selectively variable free volume and method for providing such is disclosed according to one or more embodiments. The perforator may include a charge tube holding an independently floating axial stack of selectively variable divider segments, each having one or more concavities formed in upper and lower sides. The segments are arranged so that concavities of adjacent segments form sockets, into which shaped charges are located. The segments provide support to minimize deformation of shaped charge cases yet provide less than 360 degrees circumferential contact about the shaped charges to form selectively variable voids for collecting debris and spall resulting from detonation. The voids and floating segments attenuate detonation shock interference. A debris guard prevents debris from entering the wellbore. Relieving slots in the debris guard attenuates transmission of shock interference through the debris guard.
