More recently, the URI pharmacy grad has been involved with two of the biggest initiatives in Rhode Island in the past few years.

We analyzed the strength of the hydrogen bonds for each water molecule in a cylindrical selection around the two central channels. Figure 4C depicts the hydrogen bond energy difference compared with the bulk water hydrogen bond energy taken as reference projected along the membrane normal direction (positive energy values represent stronger hydrogen bonds in this figure). The S-HC8 system exhibits a strong and constant stabilization of the water molecules of almost 20 kJ/mol for the two central channels. For R-HC8, the stabilization varies from a maximum of about 13 kJ/mol down to 0 kJ/mol as in bulk water, which is due to an increased mobility—and hence destabilization—of the channel water molecules on one side of the membrane. For HC8, the hydrogen bond energy is fluctuating with a global tendency to be slightly less stable than in bulk water. Compared to bulk water, the hydrogen bond stabilization energies averaged over the central pore–inserted waters from about z = −1.2 to 0.8 nm are +17.6, +4.6, and −1.3 kJ/mol for S-HC8, R-HC8, and HC8, respectively.

Abstract: A thermal detection system for detecting a thermal profile of an optical window may be used in an airborne body that contains a sensor system. The system may include a thermal imager arranged within the airborne body for imaging a portion of the optical window and the portion may coincide with an optical path of the sensor system. The system may further include a processor in communication with the thermal imager for receiving images of the portion and determining a thermal gradient of the portion. The processor may be configured to apply corrections to active optical elements of the sensor system to accommodate for adverse thermal effects on the optical sensor that interferes with the sensor system performance.

Abstract: Gaskets, including aircraft gaskets, are disclosed, the gaskets having an elastomeric gel body and substantially incompressible skeletons. The bodies may be pliable and deformable and, in one example, may be comprised of a two-part chemically cured polyurethane that sets up as a gel after mixing with the web so that it is fully integral with the web and so that there is substantially no air bubbles or air pockets left in the web. The web may be a regular shaped web and made of nylon.

Man is rapidly wiping out species. Perhaps new technology can help save at least a few of them (though not nearly as a much as stabilizing human population growth). Consider, the Associated Press reports, a new simulator that lets scientists use a joystick “to swim a virtual whale across a video screen’’ as part of efforts to save the close-to-extinction North Atlantic Right Whales that swim off New England.  The idea is to better understand how the huge mammals become entangled in fishing lines and then develop such solutions as ropeless fishing gear, an experiment with which is underway with Maine lobstermen.
