Abstract: A packaged electronic system comprises a slab ([b]210[/b]) of low-grade silicon (l-g-Si) configured as ridges ([b]114[/b]) framing a depression of depth ([b]112[/b]) including a recessed central area suitable to accommodate semiconductor chips and embedded electrical components, the depth at least equal to the thickness of the chips and the components, the ridge covered by system terminals ([b]209[/b][i]b[/i]) connected to attachment pads in the central area; and semiconductor chips ([b]120, 130[/b]) having a thickness and terminals on at least one of opposing chip sides, the chips terminals attached to the central area terminals so that the opposite chip side is coplanar with the system terminals on the slab ridge.

But they faced increasing scrutiny. Dozens of illnesses caused by brightly colored Halloween candy in 1950 led the FDA to strike coal tar colors Orange #1, Orange #2, and Red #32 from the list. Any potential renewal of their status was squelched when testing of all three colors made lab animals seriously ill. Twenty years later, another scare involved Red #2. Some tests showed that the color made female rats develop tumors. The backlash was so intense that some companies stopped selling red-dyed food for the next decade. The red M&M disappeared until 1987.

Histamine, octyl, and R- and S-octan-2-yl isocyanates were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Co. PC (chicken egg), PS (porcine brain), and Chl were purchased from Avanti Polar Lipids. Trizma hydrochloride, Trizma base, sodium phosphate monobasic, sodium phosphate dibasic, NaCl, Hepes, calcein, EDTA, Triton X-100, SDS, D2O, ethanol, and chloroform were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Co. Compressed N2, He, and O2 were supplied by Airgas. All buffers were prepared fresh and filtered through a 0.22-μm polyethersulfone membrane (Express PLUS, Millipore). For the SFG experiments, PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) and SDS were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Co. Sodium chloride was purchased from Mallinckrodt Chemicals. Ultrapure water (Millipore MilliQ, 18.2 megohms·cm, ≤ 5 parts per billion total organic carbon) was used for all solutions. Equilateral CaF2 prisms were obtained from Crystran Ltd.

Khandekar allows the public to examine a small vitrine of pigments, but the main collection can be glimpsed only from across an atrium courtyard. Many of the pigments inside are still used for research. In 2007, Khandekar and his colleagues analyzed the paint in three works previously thought to have been by the Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock, who died in 1956, revealing a yellow pigment, PY 151, that was developed in 1969, as well as a red pigment mixed in a brown paint that was not developed until 1974, and also other media and binding not available until the nineteen-sixties and seventies. Analysis of a life-size portrait of King Philip III, of Spain, from the workshop of the court painter Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, circa 1605, which was acquired by the Fogg a century ago, revealed traces of cochineal carmine and quite possibly Mummy Brown, much darkened and deteriorated—the palette thus encompassing an empire of pigments from Egypt to Oaxaca.
