On October 5, the Greek port of Piraeus suffered an accident. Several containers collapsed at the dock. Fortunately, no casualties were caused.
The Union of Container Workers at the Port of Piraeus Terminals (ENEDEP) expressed deep concerns about safety issues, stressing that if the incident had happened earlier or later, casualties could have been caused, and they demanded action for better safety measures.
ENEDEP released a series of photos of the scene, showing some containers lying in a mess on the dock, while several others were tightly attached to the supporting structure of the crane. Some containers had been crushed or cracked.
The Port of Piraeus has been under pressure in 2024 as container ships were diverted from the route through the Suez Canal. Container throughput fell 13.5% in the first five months of this year, with the port’s monthly average volume of about 320,000 TEUs, and volumes in May fell more than 24% compared with the same period last year.
